“India is yet again trying to nourish the tiger terrorists” - Chairman of the NFF, MP Wimal Weerawansa

At a recent press briefing held at the NFF headquarters in Battaramulla, Chairman of the NFF, MP Wimal Weerawansa said that any undue influence made by India or any other nation with regard to the present military drive in the north, should not be entertained by the government. Commenting further Weerawansa stated that recent discussions held between the Indian Defense Advisor and the Sri Lankan Ambassador in India as well as discussions between the Indian Ambassador in Sri Lanka and His Excellency the President, all point in the direction of undue influence exerted by the Indian government.
It was also made clear that recently attempt by members of the Tamil National Alliance in lobbying their fellow political allies in South India will result in the central government issuing a position against the present military drive in the north. Whilst reinforcing his prior statement that the Indian government should not make the same mistake of attempting to nourish the tigers, as in the past, Weerawansa also highlighted the fact that it was those very same mistakes the led to the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.
Weerawansa concluded that no matter what influence is exerted, that the only influence the government must give into should be the mandate of the 2005 presidential elections that called for the total destruction of the tigers. This is the final chance the nation will have to destroy the tigers and the government must not subject itself to any external influence and act in the best interests of the Sri Lankan populous.

Act now to stop the Ceylon Electricity Act
Immediate action must be taken to stop the Ceylon Electricity Act currently under review in parliament. This was according to a statement made by NFF Secretary for Professional Affairs, Piyasiri Wijenayake, at a media briefing held recently at the NFF headquarters.

According to Wijenayake if the Ceylon Electricity Act were to passed in parliament it would provide any individual who wishes to, the opportunity to generate, transmit and distribute electricity. In addition this act will also serve to gradually eradicate the government electricity monopoly.

This will place electricity in the same league as oil, telecommunications and milk powder, entities that have faced privatization in the past. The Ceylon Electricity Act will also pave the way for the establishment of an Electricity Regulatory Authority. Wijenayake highlighted that this would not be an ideal sitation given prior actions by entities such as the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission that have left the consumer in dire straits.

‘ JVP has opted for a path that will harm the nation’
S W Piyawardena,
Pradeshia Saba Member – Ayagama

Below is an excerpt of a letter from S W Piyawardena, Pradeshia Saba Member – Ayagama, to the Chairman of the Ayagama Pradeshia Saba.

“ It was in 2006 that I contested for the Pradeshia Saba polls under the JVP umbrella. During this time it was the voters of Ayagama that gave me the strength to contest. I was subsequently voted into the Pradeshia Saba. Today the strength and courage given to me by the citizens of Ayagama, is no longer present.

The voters of Ayagama are disillusioned and hopeless by the current path opted for by the JVP. Recent elections show how a majority of the nation also agrees with the voters of Ayagama. As I am also of this opinion, I wish to hereby express my desire to join hands with the NFF, a political entity that has arisen to take forward a politics that is wholesome, healthy and benefits that nation.”

JNP to bring in new recruitment bill
The Jathika Nidahas Peramuna pledged to end the politicisation of the public service by bringing in a new Bill titled “Recruiting Criteria for Public Service Bill” to Parliament soon. JNP MP Piyasiri Wijenayake told a press conference held at the parliamentary complex yesterday that a stable recruitment process for the public sector would be introduced through this bill for the first time after independence.

Wijenayake explained that people had been recruited with a view of fulfilling petty political objectives. The JNP MP charged that the current government was requested by many to introduce a process but it would not heed those requests and this situation forced them to bring in this bill. He said under the proposed bill an examination would be held to select the suitable persons while interviews would be held to determine whether a person had the relevant qualifications.
